Making Ugly Art

Ok, maybe not ugly, but weird at least. All my art is weird. Even when I try to make something that looks like something it still comes out weird as hell. I've kind of resigned to it at this point. I know people who just started teaching themselves to draw a few months ago who already make near perfect portraits. I can't evern draw eyes properly. So I lean into the weird.

I don't think there is anything wrong with that. Honestly, I think art should be weird. Nothing wrong with "normal" art. I love seeing portraits and fan art and pets drawings. I have some friends who are super talented who do all these things. But I was in some groups on Facebook who thought that anything NOT pristine perfect art was ugly hideous crap. One guy looked at my painting, Similar to the one above and said "you look like you're mentally ill." I said "Well, I am hence the weird art." then he blocked me.

Not much you can do on that one. Not everyone will be a fan. In my case most people won't be fans. But a few people may appreciate the things I put out there and that's what is most important to me. Fact is, the world is currently a pretty wild and ugly place right now. We need more art, we need more weird art. We need more splatter paintings, acrylic pours or just going berserker with the brush to make whatever your mind can conjure. Don't hold back and don't let "artist block" stop you. Just go for it, whatever IT is. As I say at home all the time, much to my wife's dismay, "Let it rip."  So don't be afraid, make that ugly art. Don't worry about who may buy it or what the market demands. I know a lot of artists rely on art for income. That said, I think sometimes we lose focus on what we think people will want to buy vs. what we want to create and lose a part of ourselves in the process. Don't be afraid, get out there and be weird.
